Give your Cat Fin-tastic Fish Oil

Give your Cat Fin-tastic Fish Oil

Everyone knows that cats love fish but did you know that it’s one of the best supplements you can give your cat? Cats benefit from the omega fatty acids, especially Omega-3, that come from fish oil.  The two types of omega-3 fatty acids are Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids have been shown to support cognitive function, joints and a healthy skin and coat. It’s a win-win for the inside and outside of your cat.

What fish oil is best?

Look for a fish oil that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines and anchovies. Wild caught fish is ideal as farm fed fish often contain more dangerous toxins and contaminants like mercury. The fresh oceans often contain little to no mercury. The omega levels are often much higher in wild caught fish.

What about vegetable oils?

While vegetable oil may have its own benefits, it is not a substitute for the nutritional value that fish oil can provide. It’s true that they have omega fatty acids in them but they are generally higher in omega-6 fatty acids and not as high in omega-3 fatty acids.

How much should I feed my cat?

Fish oil should be fed every day for optimal support. Feed 20-55 mg per pound of body weight once a day. Split the fish oil between their meals so that it can be added as a dressing to their food. Review your cat foods to see how much omega-3 they receive in their daily meals and adjust the supplement, if needed.

Freeze fish oil in an ice cube tray for a refreshing treat or drizzle on a plate to give directly. Adding it to a cat treat would also be delicious.

Fish oil is a great addition to your cat’s diet, helping them stay healthy and active. It’s always best to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to your cat’s diet.
