An occasional cough may be normal dog behavior and not cause for concern. Repetitive coughing may be a sign of a more serious problem like kennel cough. If you suspect that your dog has kennel cough follow these steps:
1. Consult Your VeterinarianWe recommend a consult with your veterinarian if you suspect your dog has Kennel Cough. Dogs who have not received a Kennel Cough vaccination or have been around other dogs (like the park, doggy day care, grooming or stores), or are older or have medical conditions are the most at risk for developing severe symptoms. Even healthy dogs that develop more severe symptoms such as a fever, appetite loss or depression, should contact a veterinarian for an evaluation. Phone the office before taking the dog as they will probably want to keep the dog separate from their other pet patients.
2. Separate Your Dog From Other PetsKennel cough is usually not serious but it is highly contagious. Isolate them from all of your other non-symptomatic pets in your home so that it does not spread. It is not necessary to isolate the dog from people since it does not spread to humans.
3. Soothe ThemMild kennel cough includes a dry hacking (honking) cough, watery mucous discharge, sneezing and sleepiness (lethargy). Keep your dog well hydrated by making sure your dog is getting enough water. Another idea is put them in a closed bathroom and turn the hot water on in the shower for steam therapy. Do not put them in the shower to avoid burns.
4. Relieve Their CoughsLook for dog cough products with these active ingredients that may provide temporary relief from persistent coughs:
- Drosera Rotundifolia
- Arsenicum Album
- Spongia Tosta
A mild kennel cough can take 1-2 weeks to fully recover. Avoid heavy exercise so they can get the rest they need. Luckily, that does provide a lot of time for cuddling which both dogs and pet parents enjoy. The extra time spent snuggling will be appreciated!
With the right care and attention, your dog will be back to tail wagging and barking up trees in no time.
If you are concerned about your dog’s health or symptoms worsen or do not improve, please seek contact your veterinarian to rule out a more serious medical problem.
