Fetching Some Sunshine: Dealing with Seasonal Doggy Blues

Fetching Some Sunshine: Dealing with Seasonal Doggy Blues

You may have heard about winter blues for people, but some dogs also will exhibit signs during the winter months too. These “blues” are usually a decrease in overall happiness and vitality and may include lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, poor coat condition and changes in behavior.

What can you do to help your pup’s mood be more paw-sitive? Here are 3 tips to help their down-in-the-dumps mood.

Take Care of Their Health

First of all, taking care of their health is vital. Make sure they are getting the proper nutrition, exercise and rest daily. If you have any concerns about their health contact your veterinarian. It would also be a good time to check that they are up-to-date on their shots and their yearly well-being visit. Take them outside on sunny days to help provide them with some extra Vitamin D. Consider adding a daily multivitamin that offers Vitamin D too.

Exercise is Key

Daily exercise is important but so is new stimulation. Make sure you have plenty of toys and activities to keep them engaged. Consider enrolling them in an obedience class or agility training to help them stay sharp and alert. You can also create at-home activities like hide-and-seek, or a scavenger hunt using their favorite foods.

Cuddles Show You Care

Love and affection from pet parents will help their mood and yours too. Spend extra time cuddling and playing to show them you care. Some dogs like to be groomed and massaged. This can be very relaxing and enjoyable.

Keeping your dog healthy, entertained and feeling loved will help keep them happy during the winter months.
